About the Assessment for R.O.A.R.S.

How it Works

Step 1: We Get to Know You

Upon intake into the ROARS program, families complete a survey that gathers anecdotal information about the child’s family and learning history.

Step 2: The Assessments

This screening process shows us your child’s strengths and weaknesses, giving us the valuable insights we need to help them become a strong reader. This is also a chance to identify potential characteristics of dyslexia.

We assess a range of foundational reading skills aligned with the science of reading.

  • Phonological awareness: The ability to identify and manipulate sounds in spoken language, including skills like segmenting, blending, and rhyming

  • Phoneme-grapheme correspondence: Understanding how individual sounds map to letters and letter combinations

  • Decoding and word-level reading fluency: Measuring how accurately and efficiently students can read unfamiliar words

  • Acadience: Monitor growth and identify targeted support

Step 3: Results

All potential Lucy Project students are required to take this assessment. Results are provided in a written report that can be shared with educators supporting the child. Based on the results, Lucy Project applicants will proceed with specialized literacy services from The Lucy Project or a recommended, better-suited alternative.
