Because literacy empowers.

We use science-based methods to turn teachers into literacy experts and students into readers.

47% of students read below grade level in Miami-Dade public schools, according to MDCPS

The current public school curriculum is not working for the majority of students. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 5 children have reading-based learning differences like dyslexia.

Without specialist support, many of these children will never read proficiently. Schools lack resources, training, and support. Parents feel frustrated and helpless. Children feel responsible for their failing grades and go to bed thinking they are less than their peers.

Together, we can raise literacy rates, confidence levels, and expand possibilities for all children in Miami.

There is a solution.

Structured Literacy is a reading remediation approach that is proven to work. The Lucy Project partners with parents, schools, and community organizations to offer free or subsidized, one-on-one and small group daily reading remediation to children who struggle to read.

With your help, we can give every child in Miami-Dade County full and fair access to the resources they need to read.

The Lucy Project collaborates with schools and community organizations to bring professional development to educators and highly effective reading remediation to children who need it most.

The Model

1. Recruit

We recruit passionate educators, committed to teaching children with learning difficulties.

2. Professional Development

We give each educator Orton-Gillingham Structured Literacy training and ongoing support. For every hour of professional development the educator receives, they donate 2 teaching hours to a child in a Title I school.

3. Match

Then, we match each teacher with a student in our Title I school or sliding scale subsidized program. After donating 60 hours, they can receive additional professional development and join our paid Specialized Tutoring Team.

4. Celebrate.

We honor the child who struggles in school. We know their potential. We measure progress and adapt lessons to give each student exactly what they need. We celebrate each milestone on their journey toward literacy.

Our students read better, faster.

Parents, teachers, school leaders, and donors know our method works.

“I was so worried about my son. I knew he was struggling, but I did not know how to help him. So, when I heard about getting free help with The Lucy Project I signed up ASAP. He is doing much better at school and he is back to being my happy kid. He loves his reading coach and we love The Lucy Project.”

The Lucy Project Student’s Mom

Principal Maytin Miret, WJ Bryan Elementary

The Lucy Project Student

“The Lucy Project Coaches were a blessing for 10 struggling students at CARE Elementary School this year.  We saw the confidence and reading skills of these students improve day by day as they were tutored with structured literacy tools used by coaches consistently 5 days a week all year.  It was very special to see how invested the Orton-Gillingham trained coaches were in seeing the student’s progress and to watch the relationships that formed over the course of the year.  They made a significant impact on the lives of the students with whom they worked.  We were inspired by them to provide the Orton Gillingham course to give our teachers more valuable intervention tools.  We’re grateful to have been a part of the pilot program and we hope to continue the partnership.”

Marty Steinberger, CARE Elementary Board Chair

“Thank you for all you have done for M. She has gone from hating school to a happy kid who can read. We never could have afforded paying for it all. Thank you!”

The Lucy Project Student’s Mom

“Every child deserves to have the opportunity to fulfill his or her potential. The Lucy Project is a significant step towards that.”
